25th May 2007 to 27th May 2007
We spent two days at the north end of the island. This is the oldest part of the island and has many deep valleys, steep cliffs and waterfalls as well as a strong agricultural and ranching history. We were also lucky to catch the Western Week street party (ironically sponsored by the New Zealand beer producer Steinlager) in Honokaa with its Saloon Girl competition. It was great to catch this slice of authentic local culture and enjoy a plate of steak and beans while watching the entertainment (sorry no pictures).
