Tools

Canterbury Data Extractor v3
Processes raw CSV exports from LAWA, ECan, and NIWA into a single structured knowledge base JSON file used by the other two tools. Run this first whenever source data is updated.
  • Ingests LAWA groundwater quality, surface water, river WQ state & trend, river ecology, and lake quality CSVs
  • Adds ECan wells, rainfall gauges, river flow gauging sites, community drinking water supplies, wastewater discharge consents, S-Map soil data, catchment land cover, and NIWA climate stations
  • Captures CouncilSiteID (ECan SQ numbers) and readable SiteID names from all LAWA surface water files, enabling direct ECan water quality deep-links in the other tools
  • Outputs a single canterbury_gw_knowledge.json file — place it alongside the explorer and well info tool to load automatically
Canterbury Environmental Explorer v3
A public health-focused environmental intelligence platform for exploring Canterbury's groundwater, rivers, lakes, ecology, land use, and waterborne disease risk. Loads from the knowledge base file — all content updates automatically when a new knowledge file is generated.
  • Interactive map with eleven toggleable layers: LAWA groundwater and surface water sites, ECan wells, river WQ and ecology, lakes, rainfall gauges, river flow sites, drinking water supplies, wastewater discharge consents, and NIWA climate stations
  • Wells and LAWA groundwater sites colour-coded by nitrate average, E. coli peak concentration (ec_max), well depth, or WQ sample count — with a live legend that updates with the selection
  • Surface water, river WQ, river ecology, and lake popups link directly to ECan water quality site cards using CouncilSiteID deep-links, and display the readable SiteID site name
  • Five chart sets covering groundwater quality, rivers and surface water, ecology and lakes, land use and agricultural pressure, and NIWA climate stations
  • Health Context tab: nine-district Canterbury choropleth map switchable across campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, average nitrate, and other metrics — with a plain-language interpretation panel and six Canterbury-specific public health intervention opportunity cards
  • Discharge Risk tab summarises active wastewater discharge consent data by type, CWMS zone, and catchment
Canterbury Well Information Tool v3
Detailed lookup for individual Canterbury bores. Enter a bore number or use your device location to retrieve well construction details, LAWA water quality data, and a comprehensive picture of the environmental context within 1 km of the bore.
  • Retrieves live bore data from ECan's well register — depth, use type, water levels, casing details, and a link to the full ECan well card
  • LAWA groundwater quality card shows nitrate average and E. coli detection history where available; nearby monitoring wells listed with LAWA data badges
  • Surface water, river WQ, and river ecology cards display readable SiteID names and link directly to ECan water quality site cards via CouncilSiteID deep-links
  • 1 km environment panel: wastewater discharge consents (to land and water, colour-coded by risk type), river flow gauging sites, and NIWA climate stations — with direct ECan and NIWA links
  • Aquifer classification card matches the bore's locality to ECan's hydrogeological zone table — aquifer type, material, depth, vulnerability, and nitrate/E. coli risk band
  • S-Map soil card shows drainage class, nitrogen leaching risk, bypass flow, and permeability for the bore location
  • Catchment land cover card shows dairy intensity, land cover breakdown, and agricultural pressure band
  • Live rainfall data from the nearest ECan gauge, with a seven-day history and alert if recent rainfall exceeds 20 mm/day
